Troubleshooting: YouTube Errors
If you see the message “An error occurred” when trying to play a YouTube video, it usually means the video player is having trouble connecting, loading, or using cached browser or DNS data.
This issue can happen in any browser and is often temporary, but there are a few steps you can try to get videos playing again.
What causes the “An error occurred” message?
There are several possible causes, including:
- Internet connectivity issues
- Corrupted or outdated browser cache files
- DNS cache problems
- Automatic DNS settings not resolving YouTube correctly
- Browser extensions interfering with playback
How to fix the issue
Depending on the cause, you may need to try one or more of the following steps:
- Restart your router or network device
Turn your router off, wait around 30 seconds, then turn it back on. - Clear your browser cache
Old or corrupted browser files can sometimes stop YouTube videos from loading correctly. - Disable browser extensions
Ad blockers, privacy tools, or script-blocking extensions may interfere with the YouTube player. - Flush your DNS cache
Your device may be holding outdated DNS information. - Switch to Google DNS
Changing your DNS servers to Google DNS may help if your current DNS provider is having issues. - Try a different browser or device
This can help confirm whether the issue is browser-specific or affecting your whole connection. - Reinstall your browser
If the browser itself is damaged or behaving oddly, reinstalling it may help. - Contact your internet service provider
If YouTube fails across multiple devices and browsers, your ISP may need to investigate.
